The Bed-Buying Advice You Need

The team at The Bed Shop have many years’ experience in the industry, and are happy to suggest and advise on the correct bed or mattress for you. However, it is also important that you choose the bed that feels right . Here are some tips that should help with the decision process:

  • Before you visit our store to browse our beds and mattresses, we recommend you wear lightweight clothing. Trying a bed in a big outdoor coat will add to the padding around you and give a false impression of how the bed will feel.
  • You will probably sleep on your new bed somewhere between 5 and 10 years, depending on the quality as a result it is essential that you try your new purchase in store. Come and have a lie down get comfortable , don’t feel rushed spend 5 to 10 mins on each mattress to get a really good idea on how it is likely to feel for perfect nights sleep. Try to narrow your choice down to 2 or 3 beds or mattresses and then spend plenty of time lying on them. 5 or 10 minutes should be the minimum for each bed - but feel free to spend half an hour or even an hour, if that's what you want to do.
  • Everybody is different and as such, will have different needs for comfort and support, i.e age, medical conditions, weight, there is no hard and fast rule, please inform the sales person for any special requirements you may have.
  • The term 'orthopaedic' generally means an extra firm bed - it is not based on any medical recommendation or other common standard. Firmness is not determined by price, although comfort, luxury, and durability, as well as additional features do come in a range of prices.
  • Do not confuse a hard bed with a supportive bed, and don't assume that an orthopaedic or firmer bed is the best option. Support and comfort are very important – for example if you sit on a hard chair for an hour, you would start to feel uncomfortable. A bed is no different, and if a bed is too hard, you will have a restless and disturbed sleep..
